Almost all marketing in this category is about the oil. Almost all failures are about the hardware. That mismatch is why so many buyers conclude a product is weak when what they actually have is a device that cannot vaporise it properly.
The four parts that matter
A disposable is a battery, a tank, a coil and an airway. The battery supplies power, the tank holds oil, the coil converts power to heat, and the airway carries vapour to you. Everything else — housing, window, branding — is packaging.
Cost-cutting happens in the coil and the airway, because those are the parts nobody can see. A device can look identical to a good one and behave nothing like it.
Coils: ceramic, cotton and why it matters
Most current devices use a ceramic coil, where the heating element is embedded in a porous ceramic body that wicks oil toward it. Done well, ceramic heats evenly and does not impart flavour. Done cheaply, the porosity is inconsistent, which produces hot spots that scorch oil in one place while leaving it unwicked in another.
Cotton wicking is older and cheaper. It works, it is more forgiving of thin oil, and it burns distinctly when run dry. The burnt-cotton taste is unmistakable and irreversible once it has happened.
Coil quality matters most with expensive fills. A liquid diamond carts product is largely paying for terpenes, and terpenes are the first thing a badly regulated coil destroys — so poor hardware wastes precisely the thing you paid extra for.
Viscosity is the hidden variable
Thick oil and thin oil need different hardware. Live resin and diamond-sauce fills are markedly more viscous than distillate, and a coil designed for thin oil will struggle to wick them, particularly cold.
That is the mechanism behind most “it stopped working” complaints about premium fills. The device is not broken; it is starved. A 2 gram live resin disposable asks more of its wicking than a distillate unit of the same size, which is why warming it in the hand makes such a visible difference.
Manufacturers who take this seriously specify a coil for the fill rather than buying a generic one. It is not visible on the outside and it is most of the difference between a device that runs to empty and one that clogs at the halfway mark.
Airflow, and the leaking problem
Airflow determines draw resistance and how long vapour dwells before reaching you. Too tight and the device feels restrictive and runs hot; too loose and vapour arrives thin and warm.
Airway design is also what decides whether a device leaks. A centre post with no condensation management will collect oil whenever the unit is stored on its side, which arrives in the mouth on the next draw. Buyers describing a packman vape as leaking are almost always describing storage plus an airway with no tolerance for it.
Batteries and the capacity mismatch
The commonest genuine hardware fault in two-gram devices is a battery too small for the tank. Two grams of oil needs meaningfully more energy to vaporise than one, and a manufacturer who scaled the tank without scaling the cell has built a device that dies with oil still in it.
Rechargeability partly solves this, and USB-C charging is now standard. Charge on a low-amperage source; fast chargers stress small cells and shorten their life. Why identical-looking devices differ
Much of this market runs on the same handful of contract-manufactured hardware platforms, customised with branding. Two products can share a body and differ in coil specification, battery cell and airway tooling — none of which is externally visible.
This is why co-branded releases are worth assessing individually. A ace ultra x packman collaboration may use different hardware from the main line despite sharing a name, and the only way to know is to run it.

What to look for before buying
